The Certified Playground Safety Inspector Course (CPSI) certification program provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date training on playground safety issues, including hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements, and risk management methods. 

Important details/course information below. Please read all requirements below BEFORE you register. 

Participants will receive:

  • ASTM F1487 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specifications of Playgrounds for Public Use
  • U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Handbook for Public Playground Safety 
  • 1.5 Continuing Education Units through NRPA

Register with the name as it appears on your driver's license to avoid delays in confirming your identity when checking in for the national exam. To ensure information privacy and test security, the email used for your registration MUST be yours. If your email address does not appear to match your name in any way, NYSRPS will make contact to request updated information. An accurate mailing address is critical to ensure the timely delivery of course materials. The CPSI Manual & Field Guide ships 3-4 weeks before the start of the course to provide adequate time to review/study the materials, and based on the individual registration timeframe. The course requires advanced reading and 15 hours of training that will prepare you to take the Certified Playground Safety Inspector Exam at the culmination of the certification course. Certification, with passage of the exam, is valid for three years. 

The course is pre-approved for 1.5 CEUs (additional submission process required by NRPA to receive CEUs). Sign-In/Out required. Snacks and lunches will be provided on Days 1 & 2 only.

  • Injury Statistics
  • Hazard Identification
  • Safety Surfacing & Use Zones

Day 2 | 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

  • Playground Safety Management
  • Playground Equipment Accessibility
  • Maintenance Procedures & Standards
  • On-Site Playground Inspection & Audit Exercise
  • Final Question & Answer Session

Day 3 | Exam 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

  • Exam check-in begins at 8:00 am.
  • The exam begins once check-in and seating are completed.
  • Two (2) forms of ID are REQUIRED to take the exam. 1) with your name and photo (eg. drivers license, military ID, passport) 1) with your name and signature (eg. credit or debit card)
  • 2-Hour Certification Exam (end time dependent on start time)

Exam Preparation: Leave all food/drinks, study materials, and cell phones secured in your vehicle. The option to take the CPSI exam via computer-based testing is available through the NRPA. To obtain additional information please visit www.nrpa.org/cpsi Be advised if you register to take the examination with the course, you will not receive a refund to take your exam via computer based testing at a later date.

Special Exam Accommodations: Candidates with a disability covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may request a special accommodation to take the computer based exam. The Special Accommodation form should be completed and submitted to NYSRPS and NRPA at least 45 days prior to the scheduled date for the course and exam. English as a Second Language (ESL): English as a second language (ESL) candidates may request a time extension and/or the use of a strict translation dictionary. The ESL Accommodation Request form must be submitted to NYSRPS and NRPA at least 45 days prior to the scheduled date for the course and exam. 

The Playground Safety Standards and CPSI examination are available in Latin American Spanish for those interested. Please request this option through NYSRPS at the time of registration.
